The Leon Levine Foundation makes grant to Habitat Greenville County

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Habitat for Humanity of Greenville County received a $40,000 grant from the philanthropic organization created by the founder of Family Dollar Stores, The Leon Levine Foundation.

After retiring from Family Dollar in 2003, Leon Levine began his second career: building The Leon Levine Foundation (TLLF) into one of the Southeast’s largest and most impactful philanthropic organizations. As the foundation strives to create permanent, measurable, and life-changing impact throughout the Carolinas, it also has the honor of curating Leon and Sandra Levine’s legacy. It does this by preserving the foundation’s history, highlighting the success of its partners, and sharing the stories of those who benefit from the Levines’ generosity.

TLLF has awarded grants to hundreds of nonprofits, charities, clinics and more throughout North and South Carolina since its inception in 1980.

Habitat Greenville is a world where everyone has a decent place to live. According to its most recent annual report, in 2021 it built seven homes, started on ten, completed 45 home repair and weatherization projects, and six neighborhood revitalizations. There were 1,310 construction volunteers who provided 16,400 hours which translates into $400,000 in market-rate labor costs.

“This incredibly generous grant will be so beneficial to the work that we do,” said Monroe Free, President and CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Greenville County. “It’s also a huge honor to know that we are thought of as deserving of a grant like this, to know that others recognize the hard work that we’re doing.”
